Free Crochet Pattern: Washcloth

Materials:

  • Worsted-weight cotton yarn (about 1 skein)
  • Crochet hook size H (5.0 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:

  • Aim for a base chain measuring approximately 9 inches (23 cm) across.

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • st = stitch

Instructions:

  1. Foundation:
    • Ch 31 (or any multiple of 2 + 1 for the desired width).
  2. Row 1:
    • SC in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. (30 SC)
  3. Row 2:
    • Ch 1, turn. SC in each ST across. (30 SC)
  4. Row 3:
    • Ch 1, turn. DC in the first st, DC in each ST across. (30 DC)
  5. Row 4:
    • Ch 1, turn. SC in each ST across. (30 SC)
  6. Repeat Rows 3-4:
    • Continue to alternate between Rows 3 and 4 until the washcloth measures approximately 9 inches (23 cm) in height or your desired length.
  7. Final Row:
    • Finish with a sc row for a neat edge.
  8. Border (optional):
    • Ch 1 and work a round of SC around the entire washcloth (There are no specific placements for this. Just try to be as even as possible), placing 3 sc in each corner for a crisp finish.
  9. Finish:
    • Fasten off and weave in all ends.
